remember when techno was all about creating the soundtrack for the future remember when there were no borders between styles or scenes remember when your favourite records were just white label vinyls, stamped with cryptic names this was exactly around the time edge of motion first made their mark on electronic music. even now, decades after they first burst on the scene, seminal tracks like set up 707 and albums like planet gong realities and ad hoc are still frequently played by techno s most revered selectors.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcodes commitment to releasing the scenes most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. with releases last year from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, luigi madonna, jel ford, dubspeeka and mark reeve, the label continues on in 2016 in much the same way, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community.

plant43 aka emile facey returns to cpu with his second ep for the sheffield imprint, and brings more of his ultra-refined electro to the table. surgical pads, robotic x0x beats and melodic basslines fuse the tracks into faceys signature science-lab machine funk. facey has been very busy since his last outing on cpu back in 2013, with an lp on shipwrec, and ep s on semantica, ac records and frustrated funk. he is showing no sign of slowing down and weightless in the void pushes his sound even further into the future

transmitting straight from the 10th floor of a beat-down rotterdam skyscraper is studio barnhus debutant mark fader. when hes not analyzing the bird life outside his studio window or contemplating matters of love, death and office management, fader enjoys churning out true school electro cuts with a modern edge and some extra fonk. we were lucky enough to catch four examples of this to put on record. vinyl only release because it felt good this time. studio barnhus is forever!

nice price deal !!! adam-x should need no introduction as he and his brother, frankie bones, pioneered techno in a post-disco, pre-guiliani, new york city through the late-eighties and onwards past the nineties with countless productions under their belts and throwing renegade parties throughout the 5 boroughs. their record store sonic groove served as a hub for purchasing cutting edge electronic music from across the globe and was a meeting point for likeminded freaks throughout the city.

tom hang is the solo electronic work of lobster theremin label owner jimmy asquith. despite being ridiculously busy either quaking dancefloors across the globe and flowing into the world a continuous catalogue of acclaimed electronic heat, jimmy has found time to follow up his ‘tidy bedroom versions’ release with more original tracks from the heavily dusted harddrive. ‘the new world’ is a sphere where pummelling techno burners teeter on the edge of freedom before winding and convulsing themselves into varying mutant zones that straddle the lines between experimental statement and tightly locked grooves to create a record of pure dystopian dancefloor heat. there is an odd and refreshing unity here within the strict, bare, functional, consuming percussion and the heady, playful, and freeform nature of hang’s melodic grip.

nolan the ninja is a throwback in many regards. in an era where many are just thrust into the realm of music without having gone through a proper stretch of artistic development, nolan has been through the gauntlet and honed his abilities to the razors edge over the past few years. nolans debut ep -fck the hype-dropped on left of center and attracted praise from 2dopeboyz, huffington post, pigeons & planes, egotripland, urb, watchloud, respect and numerous other outlets. after eye opening live appearances on dj eclipse s halftime show and tony touch s toca tuesdays shade 45 show it was clear the world needed a full length album from him.

the album is a soundtrack of music inspired by the movie rubble kings and is out globally via mass appeal records. produced by longtime run the jewels collaborator little shalimar, the album features appearances from bun b, ghostface killah, killer mike, tunde adebimpe, mr muthaf*kin exquire, boldy james, cuz lightyear, ka and roxiny, in addition to run the jewels. scoring the film was the first time little shalimar set out to make period music. half of the music on this album was taken directly from the score and is heavily indebted to ‘60s and ‘70s soul and funk music. for the new tunes shalimar sampled joints from the score and created new beats out of them.
